ON JUNE 13, 1873, a team of miners was working hard to extract a rumored gold ore from the deep in the Hacienda Mountains, just east of Rattlesnake Hollow. The foreman, John Danvers, had directed them to dig deeper than they were accustomed to. He claimed he had a gut feeling that they were close to discovering something that would be worth all the trouble.

Something priceless...

Danvers wasn't wrong there.

Unfortunately, he and all but one member of the mining team wouldn't survive long enough to witness the fruits of their labor.

The miners dug too deep and released unto the world something that had been buried for centuries. Every living person — possessing even the slightest ounce of mystical blood in their veins — within a twenty-mile radius of the Hacienda Mountains witnessed the sky explode with golden light... an instant before they lost consciousness. Reapers experienced a tingling sensation, almost like millions of tiny insects crawling all over them, as they became visible to the living world.

Magic had been born back into the world.

Three hours later, people began to regain consciousness. Those who lived closest to the mountains experienced odd changes. An old woman swearing she could hear a conversation going on outside her window, and yet no one was there but two crows perched on her garden fence. A young boy playing in the mud, thoughtlessly melding square rocks out of nothing but soil, using them as building blocks. A middle-aged woman lifting a toppled carriage off her husband.

And Reapers discovering they can be seen by the living.

While the news of the incident spread like wildfire across the nation, and Melvin Corr becoming an instant celebrity for surviving the cave-in that had ensued following the explosion of light (unfortunately he had devolved into madness and is unable to enjoy said status), the individuals experiencing these bizarre and terrifying changes struggled to keep their powers hidden. It hasn't stopped people from wondering if this is hell on earth.
