MANCHESTER TERRITORY

Named for the county of the same name in England, the Manchester Territory, known in short as Manchester, is a small area wedged between California, Arizona, and Mexico. It was established in 1829 as one of the first liberalized territories in America. The white men sought to share the land and build a society that allowed freedoms to everyone, no matter their race or gender. Despite national criticism, the territory began to thrive. It became a hotbed for supernaturals, families of them migrating to this state because it was easiest for them to hide from suspicious human eyes. Unfortunately, Manchester also became a popular place for gangs and bandits.

It is roughly the size that Louisiana is today, encompassing 50,873 square miles and holding a population of about 30,000 people of varying races. Manchester boasts of a Mediterranean climate, with warm to hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. It has both desert areas and dry grasslands, as well as rich soiled areas that are ideal for farming. The major export of this territory is iron ore.

Transportation in and around the territory is powered by horses only, owing to the fact that the rest of the country is resentful toward Manchester's overly liberal ways. The railroad company refuses to build tracks into this area. Manchester's government is working hard to remedy this.

There are three regions that make up the Manchester Territory.

CADDO
CADDO, named for the tribe of Native Americans, is the western-most region of the Manchester territory. It borders both Hopkins Plain and Rio Lobo to the east. This area is mostly grass and oak woodlands, which fade into drier grass and desert the farther one moves to the east. Caddo also boasts of rich soil near the coast, making it an ideal place for farms and vineyards.

The Sanchez River branches out from the Colorado River and flows west into the Pacific Ocean. The Wishbone River — more of a creek, really — is also kept flowing by the Colorado River.

South of the Sanchez River is Glenville, the largest town in Manchester. It was founded in 1835 by Glen Starr (1803-1866), who became a legendary gunslinger and marshal. The open farmer's market at the edge of town was first organized in 1839, by Starr's wife, Sonia (1809-1863). It started out as three small booths set up alongside the general store two days a week, and expanded into its own area of multiple booths, where anyone could come and sell their wares. Open Market days now occur on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. See the business page for more information about jobs in this town.

Father west and also south of the Sanchez River is the Unnamed Ranch. Northwest of the Wishbone River is the Porter Ranch, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Porter. A few miles to the east is Unnamed Ranch.

HOPKINS PLAIN
HOPKINS PLAIN is named for Neil Hopkins (1791-1841) , the man who first offered the peace treaty to the Native Americans, which stated that if they raised no weapon against any tribe, they could share the land. The Plain borders Caddo to the west and Rio Lobo to the south, and is primarily a dry grassland area interspersed with cacti. The dry soil here offers little in the way of farming, and therefore is better suited to horse and cattle ranching.

The Colorado River snakes down through the west, branching off into the Sanchez and traveling to the east and into Arizona. Jagged, rocky cliffs jut up from the otherwise flat land, the tallest of which being Harper's Bluff. This rock facing forms a protective arm around Unnamed Town.

To the south, the Hacienda Mountains create a natural border separating Hopkins Plain and Rio Lobo. The Unnamed Ranch, Unnamed Ranch, and Available Ranch are also here.

RIO LOBO
RIO LOBO, the southernmost region of Manchester, takes its name from the Spanish words Rio, meaning "river", and Lobo, meaning "wolf." An ironic sort of name, considering the land is mostly desert. It is the driest of the three regions, making it unsuitable for most forms of farming.

Animal attacks are frequent in this region, particularly near the mountainous areas. For this reason, and its hot, dry weather, Rio Lobo is the least populous of the three regions. The Hacienda Mountains and the Colorado River form natural borders that separate this region from Hopkins Plain to the north and Caddo to the west.

Paydirt Hollow, very recently renamed to denote the area where the miners perished and the rumor of the hidden treasure arose, is here. It was previously known as Rattlesnake Hollow and is nestled at the foot of the Hacienda Mountains. Anyone with magical blood in their veins is unable to come within half a mile of this place without becoming ill. Humans, however, can come and go as they please, so long as the local wildlife and falling rocks don't cause a threat. The natural caves along this mountain range are often used as gang hideouts.

Noose Ridge lies to the southeast of the Hacienda Mountains. This rock formation is a third the size of the Hacienda, and is named for the seventeen law officers who were executed there when the people of Black Oasis were fighting for their right to a town with no law enforcement. Many ghost tales have stemmed from this grim place.

Black Oasis, also known as Death's Oasis, is the second largest settlement in Manchester. It was established in 1855 by a gang of outlaws who wanted the same freedom to build a town, yet free of the restraints put on them by the government. Criminals flocked to the area, making it a booming but dangerous place to be. These people were able to set up their own system of what was acceptable and unacceptable behavior, and while rivalries still existed, the majority of the population here managed to get along well enough to build a place suitable to be called a town. It's mainly just a saloon and brothel with a few buildings selling wares, and camps set up about the area, where people engage in gambling and soliciting prostitutes. In Black Oasis, the black market thrives. See the business page for info about jobs in the town.

To the west of Black Oasis is an area of jagged cliffs, Falcon's Reach, that hang over the Colorado River. Father south, Jorge's Rock and two other smaller rock formations rest in solitary confinement near a fort [that will be added later]. Despite Rio Lobo being mostly unfit for farming, the greener area near the river is the location of the Available Ranch.
